Gasunie invests in security of supply

New compressor unit secures gas transport from west to east

CREATIVE WAYS TO REACH YOUR GOAL FASTER

With a third compressor station in Achim-Embsen, our customer, the Dutch-German gas infrastructure operator Gasunie, is solving short-term capacity bottlenecks in the gas supply. The additional compressor unit helps to prevent critical energy supply situations in the event of a cold winter or possible supply failures.

As a result of the war in Ukraine and the associated complete stoppage of gas supplies from Russia, the direction of gas flows in the Gasunie network has reversed to a west-east direction. To react as quickly as possible, Gasunie took creative approaches – with the help of our colleagues from Visbek and Bremen.

The project: Dismantle an existing compressor unit at a plant in Schleswig-Holstein that is not currently required, transport it to Embsen and reassemble it there.

Timetable was the biggest challenge

The new plant in Embsen was to be up and running within just one year. “With detailed technical preliminary planning, we first had to check whether the ambitious project was feasible at such short notice,” says our colleague Rainer Darkow, Head of Ex Systems and Valve Technology.

This was followed by the detailed planning, the procurement of all the necessary materials and finally the construction.

Everything went even faster than originally planned. “The dismantling of the 50-tonne gas turbine in Schleswig-Holstein with the associated work went so smoothly and quickly that we ended up with three to four weeks more time for our activities in Embsen and were able to bring forward our deadlines further and further,” recalls the department head.

“Working on the gas network is an extremely sensitive task and requires extensive expertise,” our colleague continues. When handling explosive substances, the highest protective measures must be observed. We are specialised and trained in such work for process gas systems and hazardous areas. Our team from Bremen supported us in this major project. At times, we were on site with 35 colleagues. This enabled us to meet the deadline and put the system into operation on time.

And the customer is also more than satisfied. “We were able to complete the project in record time. Everyone involved worked together perfectly,” says Karl-Heinz Geerling, Project Manager Gasunie Deutschland. His colleague Dr Michael Kleemiß, Project Manager, adds: “A great achievement. In this way, we can make our contribution to Germany security of supply.”

Without the strong collaboration between our top teams from Visbek and Bremen, we couldn’t complete such a project in this time.
